Why NIN?
The Importance of the Nigerian National Identification Number (NIN) and How to Obtain It in Toronto. For Nigerians in Toronto, the Greater Toronto Area and Ontario, identity verification is essential, and the NIN is increasingly required — including for passport renewals.
Why the Nigerian NIN matters in Toronto
For Nigerians living in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada, a valid NIN is no longer a distant Nigerian requirement. It is a practical, everyday necessity for identification, for travel documents, and for access to services.
1. Legal requirement for passport renewal
The Nigerian government has made a valid NIN mandatory before a Nigerian passport can be renewed. This requirement centralises and streamlines verification, so that passport renewal — the reason most visitors to NIN Center Toronto first seek help — depends on first holding a valid NIN. If you are planning a Nigerian passport renewal in Toronto, obtaining or reactivating your NIN comes first.
2. Enhanced security
The NIN is a unique identifier for each person. Because it is tied to biometric details held on the National Identity Database, and because the data is centrally held and retrievable, the NIN helps prevent identity theft and fraud. One person, one number, verified against biometrics, is far harder to duplicate or misuse than a name or a paper document alone.
3. Access to government services
A NIN opens access to government services in Nigeria, including health-insurance enrolment, bank accounts, driver's licences, and other services that require verified identification. For Nigerians abroad, the same verified identity is what consular services, banks, and government offices rely on before they act.
4. Global recognition
The NIN is a recognised, standardised form of identification for Nigerians abroad. When dealing with foreign governments and institutions, a standardised national identifier carries weight that an unverified local document does not. That global recognition is one reason the NIN is increasingly asked for, even outside Nigeria.
How to obtain your NIN in Toronto
NIN Center Toronto, at 75 International Blvd, Unit 201G, Toronto, is an official NIMC partner for NIN enrolments and updates for Toronto, the Greater Toronto Area, and Ontario. Click to book an appointment for NIN enrolment in Toronto and begin the process below.
Step 1 — Preparation
Gather the details you will be asked for, including your Nigerian state of origin and local government area of origin, your height, and other personal details. Having these ready before your appointment makes biometric capture faster and avoids a wasted visit.
Step 2 — Booking an appointment
Booking an appointment in advance is advisable, because demand is high. You can book here, through the centre's website, for biometric capture at 75 International Blvd #201G, Toronto, ON M9W 6L9. Appointments are by appointment only.
Step 3 — Required documents
Typically, you will need a valid Nigerian passport, a birth certificate if you do not have a passport, and other Nigerian identification. For a new registration, you will also need a National Population Commission certificate number — see the checklist on the Get Your NIN page before you start, including the exception where your BVN starts with 221 or 222.
Step 4 — Biometric capture
At the centre, your fingerprints and photograph are captured. This biometric capture is what ties your NIN to you, and is why the number is non-transferable and unique to its holder.
Step 5 — Issuance of your NIN
After capture, a slip containing your NIN is issued in 1 to 5 days. Keep that NIN slip safe: it is the security paper on which your number is issued, and you will need it for passport applications and other identification purposes.
In conclusion, the NIN is essential for passport renewal and for government services for Nigerians in the Greater Toronto Area. If you live in Toronto, the GTA, or Ontario and do not yet have a NIN, or if your NIN is suspended or bank-generated, start with the route that matches your situation on the home page, or book an appointment directly.
